I have used the idea of chaos as a jumping off point throughout my career as an artist. More specifically it is the idea of organizing chaos that has presented itself throughout most of my work. Today this concept manifests itself in what I have dubbed “deconstruction and reconstruction”. This theme, related directly to chaos and flux is carried throughout most of the work of the past few years. The power of this “deconstruction and reconstruction” theme is its direct correlation to events in my life and in the world around me. Initially this thesis exhibited itself at a time when my entire world was turned upside-down through a variety of life-altering events. In essence my entire life was “deconstructed”. The artwork began as a healing process. As my life “deconstructed”, I tore apart, cut and shredded my canvases. And then “reconstructed” them by sewing, knitting and otherwise reassembling the pieces to create new, interesting and sometimes beautiful works. The parallel to my life was obvious. In time, this healing became a way for me to make a statement and to create correspondences not only to personal events, but to world events. My interest in history, geo-political events, and geography has led me down this current path. Geography has now become a symbol of both myself, and the world outside of myself. My method of deconstruction and reconstruction is a way for me to “heal the world”…or my view of the world. |
